They were an observant Jewish family with a comfortable life.  That perfect life changed one night in 1944 when the Germans arrived and ordered his family to Auschwitz concentration camp.  This book details his struggle to survive as Elie is forced to confront the absolute worst evil in others.   He tells this terrible story in hopes that this horror never happens again.
