Fig's mother has battled schizophrenia since she turned nineteen.  Her disease makes it a challenge for her to be the kind of mother that Fig would like her to be.  Fig knows that schizophrenia runs in the family so she is worried about what will happen to her when she turns nineteen.  As she grows up, she watches as her mother turns farther and farther away from her until she eventually becomes someone who is unrecognizable.  Fig has to figure out how to survive in spite of the chaos and uncertainty in her life.
